Can we meet you?
Of course! My name is Salome Danjuma, and I am currently the Food and Beverage Manager at The Wheatbaker. I've been working in the hospitality industry for 10 years, and I'm passionate about creating exceptional dining experiences for our guests.
What inspired you to choose a career in the hotel industry?
I've always had a deep love for hospitality and food. I enjoy the creativity and the ability to positively impact people's experiences through service and cuisine. The dynamic nature of the hotel industry and the opportunity to work with diverse teams and guests also drew me in. However my path into this industry was a suggestion by my very wise grand father who sponsored my education in Hotel Management. I would not be here without him.
What hope does a girl child have in this industry with the way it's perceived in Africa?
Despite challenges in perception, the hospitality industry in Africa offers great opportunities for women. There's a growing recognition of women's leadership and talent in this field. My advice to young girls is to pursue their passion, seek mentorship, and demonstrate their skills confidently to succeed.
What's your typical day like as a Food and Beverage Manager?
My typical day involves overseeing dining operations, ensuring quality service standards, managing staff, and collaborating with chefs. I handle guest inquiries, address any issues promptly, and work on strategic initiatives to enhance the F&B offerings. You cannot forget a cup of our Mai Shayi exclusive Wheatbaker coffee blend to start the day.
How much do you love it here?
I truly enjoy my role at The Wheatbaker. It's fulfilling to be part of a team dedicated to delivering memorable experiences. The supportive environment and the opportunity to work with talented individuals make it a rewarding experience. I love all the mini projects i get to explore- like our Wheatbaker Chocolates created from cocoa pods from Ondo State by Pod Chocolates. Our Support for local suppliers like Pedro's Ogogoro of which I am a huge fan.
If you are offered a salary three times higher than you have here, will you take it?
While compensation is important, my decision would depend on various factors, including career growth, job satisfaction, and work-life balance. The opportunity to contribute meaningfully and grow professionally is paramount to me.
Outside of work at The Wheatbaker, what else do you do?
Outside of work, I enjoy exploring different cuisines, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. I also engage in activities that promote personal growth and wellness hence my enrollment with Dr Sears Institute for their health coaching training.
What do you like most about your job?
I really love how my job is like a box of chocolates — you never know what you're going to get! Each day brings new surprises and challenges, keeping things exciting and unpredictable. The aspect I enjoy most is the opportunity to create memorable experiences for guests through exceptional food, service, and ambiance. I also value the teamwork and creativity involved in delivering these experiences.
Do you have a favorite colleague? Who is it and why?
In a collaborative environment like ours, it's hard to pick a favorite! I appreciate all my colleagues for their dedication and teamwork. We share a passion for hospitality, and each person brings unique strengths to our team. If I was to pick, it would be the legend our GM - Paul Kavanagh his insights and sense of humor brighten any day.
What meal is your best seller that you'd recommend to any guest irrespective of color?
Our best seller and a personal favorite is our Asun and plantain. However, I have seen many people enjoy our Egusi Soup with rice and fried plantains. It's a delicious and unique appealing option that showcases our culinary expertise.
Any Advice for the young ones aspiring for your role?
My advice would be to gain experience in various areas of hotel, develop strong communication and leadership skills, and continuously seek learning opportunities. No learning is lost. I have drawn upon many random skills I picked along the way. So I would encourage making learning a lifelong pursuit. Network with industry professionals, stay updated on industry trends, and pursue your passion with determination and enthusiasm.
